"Ha talaga? Hindi ko alam yun!"
The disbelief in Ranran Abdilla's voice was palpable as he processed the news that his extraordinary performance for the Philippine Air Force had just shattered the league record for most points scored in a single game during the 2023 Spikers' Turf Invitational Conference.
Standing tall at 6 feet 4 inches, the wing spiker exploded for an astonishing 47 points, showcasing his prowess with an impressive 40-of-76 attacking clip. Abdilla's remarkable display also included six service aces and one block. Despite his outstanding efforts, the Airmen experienced a heart-wrenching 35-37, 25-23, 18-25, 25-21, 12-15 loss to La Salle-EcoOil at the Paco Arena.
In a humble response, Abdilla, who was unaware of his achievement until informed, expressed his joy at making history in men's volleyball at the age of 31. "Actually hindi ko naman ini-aim yun eh. Binigay ko lang yung best ko, pinakita ko lang kung ano yung kakayahan ko at inenjoy ko lang," said the pride of Tawi-Tawi.
"Masaya naman talaga kasi at age 31, hindi ko naman ineexpect na magkakaroon ako ng ganong record."
The previous record, held by now-Korean Volleyball League import Marck Espejo, was set at 43 points during the HD Spikers' five-set, 2019 Open Conference championship clinching win against Air Force on October 22, 2019. Abdilla was part of that Air Force team, witnessing Espejo break the 41-point record set by EAC's Howard Mojica.
A product of De La Salle University-Dasmariñas, Abdilla played a crucial role in the Philippine Men's National Volleyball Team's silver-winning performance at the 2019 Southeast Asian Games, forming the formidable trio known as "BAE" with Bagunas and Espejo.
While Bagunas and Espejo, both 26 years old, bask in success playing abroad, Abdilla discovered his new forte on the sands. As an enlisted Air Force personnel, he has been representing the country in beach volleyball tournaments, often partnering with Jaron Requinton.
"Syempre lahat naman ng players hindi naman laging naglalaro. Lumilihis din tayo kung saan sa tingin natin magiging okay tayo which is nag beach volleyball ako," shared Abdilla, who missed some games in the 2023 Open Conference due to injuries.
Regrettably, Abdilla's brilliance may not grace the Spikers' Turf arena in their final game on December 1, as he, along with Requinton, is set to participate in the Volleyball World Beach Pro Tour in Nuvali, Laguna, starting November 30. As the curtains close on this conference, Abdilla's unexpected record-breaking night stands as a testament to his enduring impact on Philippine volleyball.
