A new chapter fuels Nico Almendras' fire

For Nico Almendras, the 2025 Spikers’ Turf Open Conference is more than just another tournament—it marks the beginning of a new chapter in his life, both on and off the court.

Just a day before the season tipped off, Almendras exchanged vows with his longtime partner, Justine Pesigan, who is now five months pregnant with their first child. The milestone has given the Criss Cross outside hitter renewed motivation to elevate his game as he steps into the role of a family man.

‘Yun ‘yung magiging motivation ko sa mga upcoming games namin,” Almendras shared, his voice filled with determination.

Almendras was granted time off to focus on his wedding and missed Criss Cross’ opening-day win over VNS-Laticrete. He made a brief appearance in their next game, a straight-sets victory over Alpha Insurance. But on Wednesday night, he fully reasserted himself, leading his squad to a hard-fought 25-17, 25-27, 25-20, 25-20 triumph against PGJC-Navy at the Ynares Sports Arena.

Returning to the starting lineup, Almendras put up an all-around performance with 14 points, including 12 attacks and two blocks, while also tallying 13 excellent receptions. Despite missing some of the team’s final preparations, he seamlessly reintegrated into the system.

His teammates had his back throughout his brief absence, ensuring that Criss Cross remained unscathed with a 3-0 record—tied with defending champion Cignal at the top of the standings. The 2022 Open Conference Finals MVP expressed his gratitude for their understanding and support.

During Almendras’ time away, Jaron Requinton stepped up impressively, averaging 12.3 points in Criss Cross’ first three games. Almendras recognized his teammate’s efforts and lauded the team’s depth, knowing they were more than capable in his absence.
