Entering his first season with Cignal, rookie opposite spiker JM Ronquillo had no grand expectations. Acknowledging the stacked roster of the HD Spikers, Ronquillo was simply eager to contribute in any way he could. What he didn’t anticipate, however, was that his role would evolve into one of the most pivotal positions on one of the league’s most decorated teams.
Despite being surrounded by established veterans such as Jau Umandal, Steve Rotter, and Wendel Miguel, Ronquillo found himself not just in the rotation, but as a full-fledged starter. His rise to prominence within the team was the result of his consistent offensive output and a tireless work ethic that earned him his spot.
"Una, accept your role. Maniwala ka lang na darating ‘yung time mo. Kung hindi ‘man sa ibang games or past games, may game rin na dadating para sa’yo na makakapag-perform ka ng the best game mo sa buhay mo," Ronquillo shared, emphasizing the importance of patience and staying ready for any opportunity that comes his way.
Ronquillo’s numbers spoke volumes. During the elimination phase, he averaged an impressive 8.57 points per game across seven matches. His standout moment came in the semifinals, where he notched a career-high 14 points in a crucial win against Savouge, showcasing his ability to rise under pressure.
Despite a slight dip in his production during the rest of the playoffs, including a scoreless outing in the knockout final against Criss Cross, Ronquillo’s contributions were felt in other ways. Most notably, he played a key role in slowing down Invitational MVP Jude Garcia, a task that helped anchor Cignal’s defense and ultimately contributed to the team securing their eighth league championship.
“Nag-focus lang talaga ako sa anong kaya ko maiambag sa team and ‘yun ‘yung ma-stop si Jude (Garcia). Although hindi ko masyado na-stop, pero at least napabagal or nade-delay ko ‘yung bola na pwede namin ma-convert as a point namin,” he said, reflecting on his defensive efforts. “Sa performance naman ng team, sobrang proud ako kasi talagang lumaban hanggang dulo.”
One of the biggest lessons Ronquillo learned in his rookie season was the importance of team chemistry. He acknowledged that he couldn’t have reached this level without the guidance and support of his veteran teammates. With players like Umandal, Rotter, and Miguel by his side, Ronquillo not only adapted to the team’s playing style but also embraced the camaraderie that made Cignal a championship contender.
“Well, syempre, yung mga kasama ko mas matatanda sa akin. So, kailangan mo talagang makisama sa ugali nila and kung paano yung sistema ng Cignal. And yun naman yung importante para mag-champion yung team,” Ronquillo added.
