Dryx Saavedra relishes learning from 'kuyas' in Spikers Turf

Through the whirlwind of pre-season tournaments, Zhydryx Saavedra, the opposite spiker for FEU-DN Steel, has emerged not just as a player but as a student of the game.

His experiences have provided him with invaluable insights into his own capabilities, the intricate dynamics of his team, and lessons learned from seasoned opponents.

Saavedra and his teammates are riding a wave of confidence following their recent championship victory in the V-League, where they dethroned powerhouse La Salle in straight sets. This remarkable performance not only secured them the title but also earned Saavedra the prestigious Finals MVP award.

“Madami akong natutunan dun eh... na kailangan pala ng katawan ko mag-relax lang. Huwag masyadong sobrang overwhelmed sa laro pag nakaka-score,” Saavedra shared, reflecting on the importance of maintaining composure during intense moments.

The young spiker realized that he must manage his emotions and heartbeat throughout the game. “Kasi parang napag-aralan ko na yung sarili ko na hindi dapat pataasin yung heartbeat ko. Hindi ako dapat madala sa emotions. Dun ko natutunan paano mag-adjust sa sarili ko,” he added.

As Saavedra prepares for the Spikers’ Turf Invitational Conference—a semi-professional league showcasing veteran players—he is determined to carry the lessons learned from competing against his "kuyas" (older brothers) into the upcoming UAAP season.

“Tulad ngayon, mga matured, mga kuya na namin yung kalaban. So, madami kaming natututunan – paano gumulang sa laro, paano yung mindset dapat, yung eagerness maka-score,” he explained. He sees this opportunity not just as a chance to compete, but as a platform to absorb the wisdom of more experienced players.

In a recent match against D'Navigators Iloilo, Saavedra led the charge with an impressive 21 points, all from attacks. Mikko Espartero also played a pivotal role, contributing 17 points—15 from attacks and two blocks—as the team triumphed with a score of 18-25, 25-16, 22-25, 20-25, maintaining an unbeaten 2-0 record.

While Saavedra reveled in the victory, he remains introspective about his performance, knowing that there’s room for improvement. “Sa akin, siguro hindi ko pa naibigay yung best ko kasi alam ko may mas kaya pa ako. Pero good thing lang kasi naka-contribute ako, at na-apply ko yung pinagsasanayan namin sa team. So, yun, nakuha namin yung panalo,” he said, underscoring his commitment to growth.

As Saavedra continues his journey, he embodies the spirit of determination and the relentless pursuit of excellence—traits that will undoubtedly serve him well as he takes on new challenges in the competitive landscape of Philippine volleyball. (CA)
