For 20-year-old middle blocker Yuma Onabe, stepping onto a Spikers’ Turf court in the Philippines was more than just a professional milestone — it was a homecoming.
Born to a Filipino mother from Dipolog City and having spent almost his entire life in Japan, Onabe described his first competitive appearance in the country as a deeply personal experience.
“It’s my first time playing volleyball in the Philippines, and it honestly felt like coming home,” he said through a translator.
“I’ve been here before, but only as a visitor, never to play volleyball. Getting to compete here makes me really happy.”
The 6-foot-2 quick hitter brought more than just heart to the court.
Despite his youth, Onabe already carries significant experience, having competed twice in Japan’s prestigious V.League.
He first suited up for the Nara Dreamers last season and now represents Kinki Club Sfida, continuing to refine his craft at the professional level.
Even with his exposure to one of Asia’s top leagues, Onabe has kept tabs on the local scene, watching Philippine men’s volleyball on YouTube in preparation for his debut.
For Onabe, the experience is just the beginning — a chance to connect with his roots while proving his mettle in one of Southeast Asia’s most exciting volleyball competitions.
