UST-Gameville and Alpha Insurance brace for a decisive Sunday challenge at the Paco Arena, each determined to punch their ticket to the semifinals as the 2025 Spikers’ Turf Invitational Conference hurtles into its do-or-die final day of eliminations.
The Golden Spikers (4-2) take on fellow V-League campaigner but already-eliminated FEU–DN Steel Tamaraws (2-4) at 5 p.m., though they will do so severely undermanned with their head coach and two key offensive pillars unavailable.
Earlier at 3 p.m., the Protectors (3-3) face the towering, unbeaten Criss Cross King Crunchers (6-0) in an all-or-nothing duel that will either extend or end their season.
UST-Gameville enters the pivotal clash without head coach Odjie Mamon and star hitters Josh Ybañez and Al-Bukharie Sali, all currently on duty with Alas Pilipinas. Their absence means the Golden Spikers’ semis hopes now rest heavily on the shoulders of JJ Macam, Trevor Valera and Sherwin Umandal, who must take on expanded roles in both scoring and leadership.
Though UST remains favored on paper, the stakes leave them with zero margin for error – a win sends them to the round-robin semifinals. A loss, however, could lead to outright elimination – if Alpha Insurance pulls off an upset against Criss Cross.
Adding to the drama is FEU-DN Steel’s hunger to finish strong. Despite being out of the semis race, the Tamaraws have shown flashes of brilliance throughout the conference, and with the trio of Dryx Saavedra, Mikko Espartero and Lirick Mendoza leading the charge, FEU relishes the chance to spoil their UAAP rivals’ campaign.
The Tamaraws’ motivation, combined with UST’s depleted roster, sets the stage for a thriller: the Golden Spikers are fighting not just an opponent, but circumstances that threaten to derail their semia bid.
Alpha Insurance, meanwhile, is up against its biggest challenge yet – a team no one has been able to beat.
However, a victory – whether in three, four or five sets – propels the Protectors straight into the semis, knocking out either Savouge or UST-Gameville depending on the outcome of the later match. A loss, however, slams the door shut on their semis aspirations and clears the path for Savouge and UST to join Criss Cross and Cignal in the next round.
Led by three-time MVP Jude Garcia, Noel Kampton and Jeron Requinton, Criss Cross has dominated the elimination round with ruthless efficiency and depth. Even with the top seed secured, the King Crunchers have no plans of easing off the gas; they aim to bring their unbeaten momentum into a semis round that will be further spiced up by two foreign guest teams.
Alpha head coach Mike Santos, still fired up after their previous loss, made his message clear:
“Very frustrated ako. Naramdaman nila ’yun, pero hindi kami puwedeng mag-dwell dun. Ilaban kung dapat sino ang ilaban, talunin kung sino ang dapat talunin,” he said.
The Protectors will look to Barbie San Andres, JJ Javelona and Rocky Motol to shoulder the scoring load and challenge the near-impenetrable Criss Cross defense. For Alpha to pull off what would be the biggest upset of the tournament, the Protectors must deliver their most disciplined, mistake-free volleyball to date.
Meanwhile, VNS (1-5) and PGJC-Navy (0-6) tangle at 1 p.m., each eager to salvage pride and close their campaigns on a positive note.
