Cignal is set to test EcoOil La Salle’s resolve in a highly anticipated Spikers’ Turf Invitational Conference showdown at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig on Friday.
The 6 p.m. match pits the HD Spikers’ experience and grit against a rising collegiate squad aiming to solidify its semifinal chances.
The HD Spikers come into the match riding a three-match winning run, rebounding well from a five-set shocker against the Savouge Spin Doctors. Now, they're gearing up to face an unbeaten Green Oilers, who have swiftly overcome their first four opponents, including two of the league’s top teams.
Cignal head coach Dexter Clamor, fully aware of EcoOil La Salle’s potential, said the HD Spikers have prepared meticulously for the matchup.
“Wala pa silang talo. Collegiate. Aggressive. Gusto kaming talunin. Lahat ng kalaban namin gumagaling kapag kami yung kalaban, so paghahandaan namin nang maigi,” said Clamor, anticipating a heated encounter with their youthful rivals.
On the other side, EcoOil La Salle mentor Jose Roque has his own plans. After scouting Cignal’s recent games, Roque believes the Green Oilers are well-prepared for the showdown.
“Nag-scout kami at talagang inalam namin kung ano ‘yung strength and weaknesses nila. We just have to make a plan para ma-counter lahat yun,” said Roque.
The Green Oilers have been impressive, notching wins against the Chichi Titans and Martelli Meats Master Butchers, and edging past the D’Navigators Iloilo and the Navy Sealions.
Although the HD Spikers bring a different level of skill and experience, Roque is confident his team, led by standouts like Vince Maglinao, Rui Ventura and Joshua Magalaman, has the tools and determination to overcome the challenge.
Meanwhile, Savouge aims to regain momentum in a crucial clash with Navy at 4 p.m.
The Spin Doctors’ four-game streak was snapped by the DN Steel FEU Ultras last Sunday, intensifying the race for the semis, with five teams now in contention in the tournament organized by Sports Vision and supported by ArenaPlus, Mikasa, and Alpha Insurance & Surety Company.
The Ultras (6-1) and the Green Oilers (4-0) currently lead the pack, but the HD Spikers, Criss Cross King Crunchers and Spin Doctors remain within reach with identical 4-1 records.
The Navy Sealions, at 3-3, are also hoping for a backdoor entry into the semifinals, making the final seven elimination playdates crucial.
Despite dropping two consecutive matches and falling to sixth place, the Sealions are optimistic about bouncing back against the unpredictable Spin Doctors.
With middle blockers Peter Quiel and Nilo Jasmin anchoring the defense, and Joeven Dela Vega and Greg Dolor providing firepower, they set out to outplay a Savouge team bolstered by talents like Giles Torres, Sherwin Caritativo, Neil de Pedro, Louis Gamban, JD Diwa and star setter John Christian Enarciso.
