Savouge overcomes Maverick challenge to boost semis chances

Savouge Aesthetics faced a tough challenge from Maverick but still emerged victorious with a 25-23, 25-13, 25-21 triumph, boosting its semifinal hopes in the 2024 Spikers’ Turf Open Conference at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig on Sunday.

The Spin Doctors secured their third straight win, improving to a 4-3 record, maintaining fifth place while cutting fourth-running D’Navigators' lead by just half a game.

However, Savouge faces a daunting task ahead as they prepare to take on the favored Criss Cross on Friday at 6 p.m., still at the Ynares Sports Arena.

“Happy pero hindi ako satisfied pa kasi there are some errors na ginagawa nila na nagbibigay puntos sa kalaban. Kailangan matrain pa namin sila sa ganong style na hangga’t maaari sigurista sila hindi sila magbibigay ng puntos sa kalaban,” said Savouge head coach Sammy Acaylar on their win.

After dominating the second set, the Hard Hitters regrouped to stay within striking distance throughout the third set, narrowing the gap to just one late in the match at 20-21.

However, Maverick faltered with consecutive errors, while Al-Nasim Amilbahar and Sherwin Caritativo delivered the final blows with a crosscourt kill and a service ace, sealing the one-hour and 24-minute victory for Savouge.

Lorenz Señoron led the Spin Doctors with 13 points, comprising 11 attacks, an ace, and a block, while Noy Pedrosa contributed 10 points and nine digs.

Razzel Palisoc and Kim Tan led the Hard Hitters with nine points each, with the latter also registering nine excellent receptions.

The Hard Hitters, now at a 1-5 record, will face Cignal next on Friday as well.
