In the heart of VNS-Laticrete's youth-driven campaign at the 2025 Spikers' Turf Open Conference, one young talent has quietly carved his place alongside the spotlight-stealing CJ Segui. While Segui's brilliance has made him the face of the Griffins, 16-year-old wing spiker RK Medino is emerging as a crucial figure in their push for success.
Medino, a promising talent from Bongao, Tawi-Tawi, delivered a breakout performance in VNS-Laticrete's pivotal 25-23, 25-19, 25-19 victory over PGJC Navy last Friday. With 14 points, including three blocks, Medino provided the perfect complement to Segui's 17-point outing.
For head coach Ralph Ocampo, whose dedication to developing grassroots volleyball talent is well-known, Medino's rise is just beginning.
"Si RK medyo may kaunting takot pa siya gawa nung nag spasms siya eh, natreat na siya pero may kaunting takot pa siya na kailangang i-overcome," said Ocampo, acknowledging Medino's lingering back spasms that previously hampered his play.
Despite his recent struggles, Medino has already shown glimpses of his potential. In their first-round encounter against the same Navy side, the 6-foot-2 spiker erupted for 24 points, including 23 attacks and a block, proving his ability to shine against seasoned opponents.
For Medino, earning a spot in the Spikers' Turf at such a young age has been a pivotal step in his development.
"Sobrang laking bagay po para sa akin na makapaglaro po sa ganitong liga gaya ng Spikers' Turf para po sa growth ko," Medino shared. "Nakakatulong po ito sa akin for my future din po para po sa college, yung exposure sa ganitong liga madadala ko na yung nilalaro ko dito."
Medino's journey has been shaped by his involvement with Ocampo's volleyball program, where he previously represented Alas Pilipinas' under-18 team. Alongside VNS-Laticrete teammates Howard Guerra, Jao Arcillo, and Terrence Marticion, Medino has benefitted from playing on higher stages early in his career.
"Grateful po ako na nakakalaro po ako sa Spikers' Turf pati na rin po sa Alas U-18 dahil kala coach Ralph po, sila po nag-expose sa akin sa mga ganitong mataas na liga," said Medino.
