NU, Ateneo dispute Pool A lead

Another heavy four-game bill ushers in Week 3 of the Spikers’ Turf Invitational Conference elims with unbeaten National U-Sta. Elena and Ateneo-Fudgee Barr squaring off in an explosive face-off for the solo lead in Pool A at the Paco Arena in Manila on Sunday.

Both the Nationals and the Eagles trampled their respective rivals to kick off their campaigns in the season-ending conference of the league organized by Sports Vision with their 1 p.m. clash looming to be a drawn-out battle of power, defense, and poise.

NU trounced NCAA powerhouse Perpetual-Kinto Tyres, 25-18, 25-17, 25-18, last Oct. 25, five days after the Blue Eagles opened hostilities with a 25-19, 25-18, 25-20 victory over Don Pacundo-La Salle Dasmarinas.

The match is set after the 11 a.m. duel between MKA San Beda and Air Force in Pool B with the Airmen also shooting for a follow-up to their 3-0 romp over Saskin-PCU Dasmariñas and the Lions seeking to rebound from a four-set setback to the Cabstars-Cabuyao.

Davies Paints-Adamson likewise guns for its second win in Pool C as it battles Santa Rosa, winless in two games, at 3 p.m. while XentroMall faces Navy at 5 p.m. with the Generals aiming to join Chef on a Diet-FEU and Savouge RTU Basilan in the Pool D lead with 2-0 marks.

But focus will be on the Eagles-Nationals encounter featuring some of the country's leading players.

"Babawi ulit kami. Yun lang yung motivation namin, makabawi. Ang importante maging maganda ulit yung training namin then kung ano ‘man yung adjustments na dapat sa game na yun, sana makuha namin," said Nationals head coach Dante Alinsunurin, referring on their disappointing fifth-place finish in the recent V-League Collegiate Championship.

The Airmen, meanwhile, hopes to draw another superb games from wing spikers Ranran Abdilla and Reuben Inaudito as they tangle with the Lions to be headed by the power duo of Kevin Montemayor and Axel Book.

While the Soaring Falcons look to get past a struggling Santa Rosa City side, the XentroMall-Navy match could be in to a protracted duel in the league organized by Sports Vision and backed by Bola.TV, Beyond Active Wear, ASICS and Mikasa.

The XentroMall Generals hope to ride on the momentum of their straight-set win over the Alpha Omege Elite Spikers while the Fighting Stingrays are out to bounce back from a five-set defeat to the FEU Tamaraws.

Games can be streamed live on SpikersTurf.ph and Pilipinas Live and telecast on OneSports and OneSportsPlus.
