National University standout Nico Almendras is set to embark on his professional volleyball career with Criss Cross, marking a significant transition from his illustrious collegiate tenure.
The announcement of Almendras joining the King Crunchers came on Wednesday night, making him Criss Cross's first signing following their defeat to Cignal in the Spikers’ Turf Open Conference finals last May.
Almendras, a three-time UAAP champion, recently played a pivotal role in National University's unprecedented four-peat in men’s volleyball, securing their victory over University of Santo Tomas in the finals and highlighting his remarkable collegiate journey.
Additionally, the 24-year-old outside spiker boasts two Spikers’ Turf titles, having led NU-Sta. Elena to victories in the 2022 Open Conference and 2023 Invitational.
Almendras is also part of the Alas Pilipinas pool gearing up for the FIVB World Championship, showcasing his prowess on the international stage.
Joining forces with Criss Cross, Almendras is slated to partner with star players like Marck Espejo and reigning Open Conference MVP Jude Garcia, aiming to make an immediate impact in the professional league.
Criss Cross made a strong debut in the Spikers’ Turf, swiftly advancing to the finals of the 2024 Open Conference. However, their campaign concluded with a loss to the Bryan Bagunas-led HD Spikers in a sweeping defeat.
