Every player dreams of that one moment when they can shine.
For Marvin Villanueva, a sparkplug off the bench for PGJC Navy since joining the team in the 2023 Spikers’ Turf season, that moment came when he was called to start against Chichi DHTSI.
The opportunity to showcase his skills on a grand stage was one he did not take lightly.
Villanueva's role had often been likened to a “magic bunot,” a term used to describe a player who can provide unexpected energy and impact when called upon. This time, with star player Joeven dela Vega resting, head coach Mike Santos decided to insert the 5-foot-11 opposite spiker into the starting lineup.
Villanueva seized the moment, leading the Navy to a convincing 25-20, 25-17, 25-15 victory. He delivered a game-high 19 points through a stunning array of plays, proving that he could step up when it mattered most.
His efficiency was nothing short of remarkable, as he converted 14 of his 23 spike attempts, while also contributing three service aces and two blocks.
This outstanding performance earned him his first-ever Player of the Game recognition in the men’s premier league organized by Sports Vision.
“Nabigla lang ako kasi first time ko kasi na nababad sa laro saka ‘yung POG first time ko rin yun,” Villanueva said. “Maganda sa pakiramdam, thankful lang ako sa mga kuyas ko. Ginawa ko talaga yung best ko para ipakita sa coaches ko at teammates ko na kaya ko rin pala ‘yung kaya ni Kuya Joeven (Dela Vega).”
While the accolades were gratifying, for Villanueva, the emotional high point of the evening came from knowing that his performance had delighted his parents back in Mindanao.
They have been ardent supporters of the Sealions, cheering for him from afar as the Spikers’ Turf matches are broadcast live on One Sports and One Sports+, with additional access through the Pilipinas Live app and the official Spikers’ Turf website.
“Ang ganda sa pakiramdam na makita ng parents ko na ganon ‘yung laro ko kasi first time din nila na makita na babad na babad ako sa laro. Nasa province po sila at ngayon lang po nila nakita na grabe yung laro ko,” he expressed.
With this impressive performance under his belt, Villanueva not only boosted his own confidence but also solidified his place within the team. The camaraderie and support from his teammates have fueled his determination to prove himself further.
Looking ahead, Villanueva and the PGJC Navy are set to face their next challenge: the unbeaten Far Eastern University-DN Steel. With the momentum of their latest victory and a newfound confidence, they are eager to sustain their impressive form as they head into what promises to be an intense matchup.
