Five months into his stint with Cignal, former De La Salle University standout JM Ronquillo is adjusting well to his new home, navigating the challenges of his rookie season in the men’s premier league with patience and grit.
As the 2024 Spikers’ Turf Invitational Conference begins, the talented opposite spiker is eager to prove he has what it takes to make a lasting impact for the HD Spikers.
Ronquillo’s first three games with Cignal hinted at his potential, but he’s aware it will take time to fully settle into his role and reach his peak. In his debut against Chichi DHTSI, he tallied nine points in three sets, and in Cignal’s match against Savouge, he added eight points across five hard-fought sets. His efforts were solid but modest, showing flashes of the skills that made him a prized recruit.
However, Wednesday’s showdown against Martelli Meats provided a glimpse of what Ronquillo is capable of when he’s in rhythm. In just two sets, the 6-foot-3 spiker dominated with five powerful attacks, two well-timed blocks, and two service aces, leading his team to a commanding 25-16, 25-16, 25-14 victory. His performance wasn’t just about numbers—it was about showing that he can be a force when the stakes are high.
Ronquillo knows the transition won’t be an easy journey but is confident in his team’s potential and their shared vision for success. “I know naman na hindi siya magiging madali talaga, and this tournament will be long,” he acknowledged. “Kailangan namin ng patience, and nilo-look forward ko na sana maabot namin yung gusto naming maabot as a team.”
His determination and adaptability have not gone unnoticed by head coach Dexter Clamor, who has placed his trust in the rookie by starting him in every game so far. The coach’s faith has only reinforced Ronquillo’s confidence in his decision to join Cignal, a team he describes as a supportive environment with excellent management.
“It really feels great to be part of Cignal management and family. Sobrang ganda nung management nila,” he shared, highlighting how quickly he’s found a sense of belonging within the HD Spikers’ ranks.
But for Ronquillo, this conference holds extra meaning, as he is set to face his former team, De La Salle-EcoOil, on November 15. That upcoming showdown will be more than just another game for the young spiker—it’s a reunion that brings both nostalgia and a desire to see how far he’s come since his time at La Salle. Ronquillo was part of the Green Spikers team that conquered the 2023 V-League Collegiate Challenge and reached the UAAP Final Four in back-to-back seasons, leaving behind a legacy of resilience and ambition.
Now, he’s eager to test himself against his former teammates and measure his progress since stepping into the professional league. “Masaya rin dahil kahit papano makakalaban ko ulit yung former team ko,” Ronquillo reflected. “Masarap rin iyon sa feeling na mage-gauge mo kung ano yung team na inalisan mo, kumbaga kung worth it ba yung pag-alis mo or what?”
The game against La Salle won’t just be a reunion; it’s a chance for Ronquillo to show his growth. (CR)
