Far Eastern University-DN Steel sent a clear message in their inaugural match of the 2024 Spikers’ Turf Invitational Conference, defeating Chichi DHTSI in four sets, 25-16, 25-22, 25-27, 25-19, at the Ynares Sports Arena on Friday.
The Tamaraws, fresh off their victory in the V-League Collegiate Challenge over De La Salle University, demonstrated their readiness for the men's premier league of Sports Vision with a commanding performance.
Chichi DHTSI showed resilience, particularly in the third set, where their attacking and blocking improved significantly. Key errors from the Tamaraws allowed the Titans to capitalize, with Jelord Talisayan's crosscourt hit going wide, giving Chichi the set point. A block by Rafael Del Pilar on Talisayan extended the match for the Titans.
However, FEU quickly regrouped, starting the fourth set with a strong 8-3 lead and effectively fending off any comeback attempts from Chichi DHTSI.
“Actually kung makikita yung galaw ng bawat isa ang bigay dahil nasa loading period kami ulit. Nag-deload kami nung sa Finals ng V-League tapos ngayon nagloloading kami kaya medyo sore ‘yung katawan,” said FEU head coach Eddieson Orcullo, reflecting on his team’s performance. He noted that despite the physical toll, they are focused on gaining experience.
“Ang habol talaga namin dito ay ‘yung experience na makukuha pero well kung mabigyan ng pagkakataon makasama sa top four mas maganda di ba? Kaya naman kami nandito para baunin ‘yung experience na makukuha dito sa Spikers’ Turf,” he added.
The Tamaraws had a balanced offensive attack, with five players scoring in double figures.
Talisayan led the way with 14 points in just three sets, while Mikko Espartero contributed 13 points.
Dryx Saavedra and Lirick Mendoza each added 12 points, and Chad Absin excelled with 11 points in only two sets.
Vennie Ceballos stood out defensively with 15 excellent receptions and 10 digs.
Next up for FEU is a matchup against the D’Navigators Iloilo on Sunday, continuing their campaign at the same venue in Pasig.
Chichi DHTSI, now struggling with an 0-2 record, saw Christian Alicante lead their scoring with 15 points, while Jonathan Sorio added 12 points.
The Titans face a tough challenge ahead as they prepare to meet the 2024 Open Conference champions, Cignal, on Tuesday at the Santa Rosa Sports Complex in Laguna.
