DLSU Ecooil salvages fifth place, dominates VNS

La Salle-EcoOil wrapped up its 2024 Spikers’ Turf Invitational Conference campaign with a 25-19, 25-22, 25-18 victory over VNS, ending a four-game skid and securing a fifth place finish at the FilOil EcoOil Centre on Sunday.

Despite a promising start with four consecutive wins, the Green Oilers fell short of making the Final Four.

Head coach Jose Roque reflected on the team's campaign, saying:  “Sabi ko mag-enjoy na lang. Somehow disappointing in a sense na ‘di kami nakapasok sa Final Four, pero hoping na with all our losses eh may natutunan kami.”

The Green Oilers actually finished tied with the Navy Stallions at 5-4 (win-loss) but the former took the No. 5 spot via superior set ratio.

What started as a promising campaign for the Green Oilers quickly unraveled, as a four-game losing streak erased their hot start and dashed their hopes of securing a spot in the Final Four.

Roque emphasized the importance of lessons learned, looking ahead to future competitions, particularly the UAAP.

Eugene Gloria stepped up in the absence of Noel Kampton, leading the Green Oilers with 13 points, all from attacks.

Vince Maglinao added 11 points, while Yoyong Mendoza contributed eight markers for the Green Oilers, who showed a balanced offense, with Eric Layug and Joshua Rodriguez each scoring six points.

For VNS, CJ Segui stood out with 16 points and nine excellent receptions, while Kenneth Daynata added nine markers.

Despite their efforts, the Griffins ended their campaign in seventh place with a 3-6 record.
