Alpha Insurance eyes stronger comeback after narrow miss

In its first-ever campaign at the 2025 Spikers’ Turf Open Conference, Alpha Insurance came tantalizingly close to clinching a semifinal berth. However, a crucial loss to VNS-Laticrete in the penultimate playdate of the elimination round, followed by a tough defeat against defending champion Cignal, ultimately shut the door on their playoff hopes.

Despite falling short, team captain Edward Camposano remains optimistic about the Protectors’ future, believing that with more preparation and team chemistry, they can break through in the next conference.

“Siguro ano, yung mahabang preparasyon and training namin. Kasi all throughout naman, yung two months na tinraining namin yun yung mga lumabas. Marami talagang kulang na kailangan pa talagang i-ayos sa training, so ayun, kailangan talaga namin ng mahabang training,” Camposano shared.

As the newest team in the league, Alpha Insurance had to form its roster and build chemistry in less than a month before the tournament. This lack of preparation time proved to be a major hurdle, but despite their inexperience as a unit, the Protectors still managed a commendable showing. With Camposano leading the way, Vincent Nadera and JJ Javelona stepped up as key contributors, helping the team remain competitive throughout the season.

Though Alpha Insurance finished in fifth place with a 2-8 record in the six-team field, their steady improvement throughout the tournament did not go unnoticed. Camposano emphasized that their growing chemistry was evident, a sentiment echoed by their coaching staff.

“Ayun, sabi nga samin ng coach namin kanina sa dugout na habang tumatagal, gumaganda yung chemistry namin. Nakikita namin yung sakripisyo ng bawa’t isa, andun naman lahat, ‘yun,” Camposano added.

Beyond refining their teamwork, Camposano stressed the importance of learning how to close out games—an area where they faltered in crucial moments of the eliminations. Several matches saw the Protectors come close to victory, only to let opportunities slip away in the final stretch.

“Siguro yung kailangan i-develop namin yung winning point namin para makapasok, para makuha namin yung panalo pagka-ganung sitwasyon na dikdikan kasi may chance na makukuha na namin tapos mawawala eh,” he admitted. “So yun yung kailangan naming i-practice, winning point hanggang end.”
